Investment Casting

Generally, investment casting is used for small castings, but has been known to produce steel castings of up to 300 kg, aluminium castings of up to 30 kg and even complete aircraft door frames. Investment casting produces multifaceted shapes that would be challenging to achieve with die casting or sand casting, and requires little surface finishing and only minor machining. While it is usually more expensive per unit compared to the alternatives, investment casting tends to have a lower equipment cost.

“Lost wax”, as investment casting is sometimes referred, is one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. Technologies have come a long way from the 5,000 year old practice, where beeswax was used to form the pattern. Now days new-aged waxes, factory materials and high-performance alloys shape and mould products with precision, consistency and versatility and techniques such as “lost foam casting” eliminate certain steps in the process, allowing for efficient production.
